Essential Hiking Tips for Beginners & Novices

Start Easy. Stay Safe. Enjoy the Journey.

New to hiking? The hills around BOOTCAMP are a wonderful place to begin your outdoor adventure. With the right preparation and a comfortable pace, your first hike can become one of the most memorable parts of your journey.

Choose the Right Trail

Start with an easy or moderate route that matches your fitness and experience level. Avoid difficult or unfamiliar terrain until you are comfortable with hill hiking.

Wear the Right Footwear

Choose comfortable walking or trekking shoes with good grip. Hill paths may be steep, rocky, muddy or slippery, particularly during and after rain.

Pack Light

Carry only the essentials — drinking water, a light rain jacket, sunscreen, insect repellent, personal medicine and a fully charged phone or power bank.

Stay Hydrated

Drink water regularly, especially in warm and humid conditions. Take short breaks whenever needed and avoid pushing yourself beyond your comfort level.

Check the Weather

Hill weather can change quickly. Check conditions before setting out and avoid difficult trails during heavy rain, storms or other unsafe weather.

Follow Your Guide

For unfamiliar routes, guided hiking is recommended. Always follow trail signs, safety instructions and the directions of BOOTCAMP staff or your guide.

Respect the Hills

Leave nothing behind except footprints. Avoid littering, disturbing wildlife or damaging plants, and always respect local communities and their surroundings.

Enjoy the Journey

Hiking is not about reaching the top as quickly as possible. Slow down, breathe in the fresh hill air and enjoy every view along the way.
